Diversity and Inclusion...

Updated: May 30, 2021

The #goodtroublebookgroup is 6 months old and while we believed we were inclusive and diverse, we were not really... Black and White alone does not define diversity nor inclusion. Mind you we are a small group and perhaps the inclusion of one or two people from the LGBTQIA2S+ community with a few blacks adds to the diversity, I still am unable to define that as inclusive. So, we've decided to make some changes.

We are a book group with a mission

The Good Trouble Book Group is dedicated to dissecting the layers of racism within our culture and within ourselves. This group was started by black and white alumni who attended Morningside High School in Inglewood, California. Our intent is to share the diversity and richness of our individual cultural experiences while exposing the toxic belief system that has embedded itself into our psyche. Our goal is to become anti-racist which means to fight racism wherever we find it, whether it be in the system, in others, or in ourselves.

Our group seeks to use the power of books to both entertain and educate, while also challenging conventional perspectives on complex and challenging issues facing marginalized groups today here in our group, in our communities and nationwide. We hope to find variations of love and friendship, self exploration, family interaction dynamics and cultural diversity to guide us to a deeper understanding.

Beginning June 1, 2021, we are moving forward with a vision for growth and intend to expand while also being more inclusive by inviting friends, family and friends of friends and so on to join our book discussion group.

This book group will be moving forward with a vision for growth with the intention of expanding our reach. We will be more inclusive in our choices of books by choosing those written by authors who were unafraid to make some "good trouble" with the purpose of disturbing our comfort zones. These will be both fiction and non-fiction.

We will include books by people, and for people, from all faiths, from all corners of the world, from all types of backgrounds. These will include books by Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Buddhists, Agnostics and Atheists authors. These will include books by LGBTQIA2S+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Two-Spirit and additional sexual orientations and gender identities.) - These will include books by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), Latino, Asian and White and PWD (People With Disabilities).

Please join us as we figure it out together. Looking forward to the better half of this year! Visit our Facebook group here. Request to join. https://www.facebook.com/groups/goodtroublebookgroup
